Riedel’s lobe is an anatomical variant of the liver. Originally described in 1988 by the German surgeon Bernhard Moritz Carl Ludwig Riedel (1849-1916) As demonstrated in the image the right hepatic vein is continuous with the hepatic parenchyma, confirming the absence of a focal mass.
In this patient, the presence of ascites allows for clearer visualization of this variant. Riedel’s lobe is more commonly observed in female patients and may occasionally be mistaken for a hepatic mass or hepatomegaly.
